Re-Enable Sleep Option in Windows Vista

In the resulting screen, click the "Change plan settings" link underneath the currently selected plan.

In this screen, click "Change advanced power settings" below power plan settings.

Now you'll need to browse down to Multimedia settings \ When sharing media.
Change both of the options to "Allow the computer to sleep". The menu item for Sleep should be back to normal.

If you have problem setting up this option, let me know by comment form.

Microsoft Office 2007 SP2 (Service Pack 2) Available for Download on April 28th

Microsoft has announced that the final RTM build of Microsoft Office 2007 SP2 (Service Pack 2) is due to release for public download on April 28th, 2009.

2nd service pack is applicable for both the 2007 Microsoft Office System and the 2007 Microsoft Office servers.

Changes that impact desktop applications :-

Service Pack 2 adds the ability to open, edit and save documents in version 1.1 of the OpenDocument Format for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. These applications now let users save, open, and edit files as OpenDocument Text (*.odt), OpenDocument Spreadsheet (*.ods), and OpenDocument Presentations (*.odp).
The 2007 Microsoft Office Service Pack 2 is the first service pack to support uninstall of client updates through the Microsoft Service Pack Uninstall Tool for the 2007 Microsoft Office Suite as well as via Windows Installer command line. The Service Pack Uninstall Tool will be available as a separate download.
The Microsoft Save As PDF or XPS add-in has been built into Office applications in SP2. Users no longer have to download and install the add-in separately.
When many graphic objects are present performance has been improved.

Word

Fidelity of PDF and XPS output has been enhanced compared to the output created through the use of the download.
Better integration of the Microsoft Office Excel Chart Object Model.

Changes that impact the server products

Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP2 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server SP2 include fixes and enhancements designed to improve performance, availability, and stability in your server farms. SP2 provides the groundwork for future major releases of SharePoint Products and Technologies.

An STSADM command line that scans your server farm to establish whether it is ready for upgrade to the next version of SharePoint and provides feedback and best practice recommendations on your current environment.
SP2 offers support for a broader range of Web browsers.
Substantial improvements to Forms-based authentication.

Barack Obama Spam, Trojan attack the world

Barack Obama Spam, Trojan have attacked the world. The Barack Obama win has given a golden opportunity to spammers across the world to tap the popularity of the President elect of United States.

Shortly after having known the results of the US presidencial elections, the cyber-crooks have used this topic to distribute malware in spam messages.

One of these malicious emails seems to be sent from an online newspaper from Peru. Its content is in Spanish and talks about the results of the US elections and invites users to view a video addressed to the Latin community.

The video is actually the file "BarackObama.exe" which has been detected as Banker.LLN. This malicious code modifies the file HOSTS of the infected computer, redirecting the http connections of some websites belonging to one of the biggest banking entities from Peru to the local IP address local 127.0.0.1, in which a fake page of the bank is displayed in order to obtain our access data.

Another example of this kind of spam is the one informing that Barack has become the 44th US president and the first Afro-American president. This email contains a link to a fake website that seems to have the America.gov domain. Besides the mentioned piece of news, we can view a video but an adobe flash update (adobe_flash9.exe) is required to view it. However, this file is not an update but the malicious code.

This malware consists of Trj/Spyforms.BQ and the rootkit detected as Rootkit/Spyforms.BR in order to hide the worm component. It is designed to capture the network traffic and harvest information related to ftp, icq, pop3, imap connections, etc…

So, browse internet and read your mails with care.

India’s Moon mission:- A big success

A fantastic achievement, says Madhavan Nair.

Chandrayaan-1 has kept its rendezvous with the Moon. In a meticulously planned operation, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Saturday accomplished the most crucial and critical manoeuvre of safely inserting Chandrayaan-1 into the lunar orbit.

This is the first time that an Indian-built spacecraft has broken away from the Earth’s gravitational field and reached the Moon. The spacecraft is now circling the Moon over its polar regions with a periselene (nearest point from the moon’s surface) of 504 km and an aposelene (farthest point) of 7,502 km.

ISRO Chairman G. Madhavan Nair called it “a fantastic achievement” and “a great moment for the country.” He described the manoeuvre as “the most crucial moment in the whole mission

The historic event took place after Chandrayaan-1 reached the vicinity of the Moon and commands were radioed to it for reducing its velocity by rotating the spacecraft in the opposite direction. In space parlance, it is called retro-firing. When Chandrayaan-1’s velocity was reduced by 366.8 metres a second, it was captured by the Moon’s gravity and safely ensconced in the lunar orbit.

Commands were being given to Chandrayaan-1 from the 32-metre and 18-metre antennas, and “their tracking of the spacecraft is excellent.” The signals received from the spacecraft were good too.

The beta includes Mozilla's new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine, which uses tracing optimization to deliver a massive performance boost that makes it faster than Google Chrome's V8 engine. Although it still falls short of Apple's recent Squirrelfish Extreme project, the Mozilla developers say that TraceMonkey still leaves plenty of room for additional optimization.

To configure TraceMonkey in beta 1, browse to "about:config" from address bar.

Another major feature that is included in this release is Mozilla's new implementation of the W3C Geolocation Specification. It allows users to supply web applications with their geographical location. For privacy reasons, the browser will automatically prompt the user before passing that information to web sites.

Chandrayaan going to enter tricky lunar orbit today

Saturday evening would mark the D-day for India's prestigious Rs 386-crore moon mission, Chandrayaan-1, when the tricky lunar orbit insertion (LOI) takes place — expectedly between 5 pm and 6 pm. The success of the moon mission, which lifted off on October 22, depends on this.

"The lunar orbit insertion (LOI) will start around 5 p.m. and last around 800 seconds," ISRO spokesperson S Satish told a news agency.

Once the operation is completed, it will be in a 7,500 km X 500 km elliptical orbit around the moon.

According to space experts, LOI is not without danger because it means traversing through an area in which the gravitational forces of the earth and moon nearly cancel each other out. Consequently, even a small deviation could send the spacecraft into a crash course towards the moon or earth - or on a path leading into deep space. Experts recall that about 30% of unmanned moon missions of US and the former Soviet Union failed during an LOI.

On the eve of Chandrayaan's LOI, an Isro official said: "Despite the challenging manouevre on Saturday, the professionalism of scientists and engineers makes us approach the task with optimism.

The main challenge before LOI was targetting the spacecraft accurately to pass near the moon on Saturday at a "safe" distance of a few hundred kilometres. The distance between the earth and the moon is 3,86,000 km. "At that distance, it will be a big challenge for us to track the spacecraft, because the moon itself will be moving around the earth at the speed of 3,600 km per hour,"

Chandrayaan leaves earth’s gravity

CHENNAI: Chandrayaan-1 on Tuesday became the first Indian-built spacecraft to leave the earth’s gravity and head towards the moon.

It accomplished this significant milestone in its journey when it entered the lunar transfer orbit with an apogee of 3,80,000 km after its on-board engine fired for two and a half minutes from 4.56 a.m. The spacecraft will cross the 3,80,000 km-mark, that is reach the vicinity of the moon, on November 8. The moon is 3,84,000 km from the earth. Chandrayaan-1 is India’s dedicated science mission to study it in detail.

Everything is proceeding as per plan. We will continue to monitor and track the spacecraft.
Commands for the crucial manoeuvre of putting Chandrayaan-1 in the lunar transfer orbit were radioed from the Spacecraft Control Centre, the nerve-centre of the operations now, located at the ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC), Bangalore. ISTRAC can control the two massive bowl-shaped antennas, with diameters of 32 metres and 18 metres, at Byalalu village, 40 km away. These antennas keep a tab on Chandrayaan-1’s journey to the moon.

S.K. Shivakumar, ISTRAC Director, said: “Chandrayaan-1 is on the way to the moon now. Its apogee will be 3,80,000 km. It is the first Indian-built spacecraft to leave the earth’s gravity. It has enough escape-velocity to leave the earth’s gravity.”

When the spacecraft approaches the moon on November 8, the Spacecraft Control Centre will beam commands for inserting Chandrayaan-1 into the lunar orbit and it will be attracted by the moon’s gravity. On November 15, it will be lowered into its final orbit when it will start circling the moon over its poles at an altitude of 100 km. The spacecraft was in good shape, Mr. Shivakumar said. The 32-metre and 18-metre antennas were “very much tracking” it.

All Govt Schools To Have Internet Connection By 2012

Union IT and Communications Minister, A. Raja announced that under the rural broadband project by 2012, all Gram Panchayats, Government High Secondary Schools and Public Health Centres will be provided broadband connectivity.

Speaking at the National Round Table Conference on ‘Telecom Sector in Education Development’, the minister said that funds from USO are being extensively deployed to increase broadband connectivity at each block and village level.
Once these facilities are in place, the broadband connectivity will be available on demand.

“The government is planning to launch bundled schemes of broadband along with customer premise equipment, including PCs with the subsidy support from USO fund”, said the Minister.

Sandisk launches world's first 16GB mobile flash memory

World largest supplier of flash memory products, Nasdaq listed SanDisk Corporation on Monday announced the launch of world's first 16GB microSD and memory stick micro mobile memory cards.

Priced at Rs 4999, the cards will be available in retail chains like Hot Spot and Croma Stores in the country, Sandisk Corporation's Asia Pacfiic MD Gavin Wu said.

The fingernail-sized 16GB memory cards allow consumers to use many high storage applications such as music and video playback, high-definition digital camera functions, gaming and GPS applications in high end phones. Most phones in the world will support the high memory cards, Mr Wu added.

In addition to the mobile phone, consumers can use the 16GB microSDHC card in a multitude of other devices, including a video camera, GPS receiver or a MP3 player with a microSD slot.

Connecting the router to the internet via DSL or cable caused the install wizard to hang. Once I’d killed the wizard the router ran correctly, but to access the network manager (which, confusingly, has almost the same name as the installer), I had to eject and reinsert the install CD, then select the manager from the menu. Perhaps by the time you read this the installation routine will be fixed.

For people who want their names to float around in space, NASA has created a website that would enable anyone to place their name on the agency's Glory satellite. The "Send Your Name Around the Earth" Web site enables everyone to take part in the science mission and place their names in orbit for years to come.

The Web site, where participants can submit their information, is located at: .Participants will receive a printable certificate from NASA and have their name recorded on a microchip that will become part of the spacecraft. NASA's Glory satellite is the first mission dedicated to understanding the effects of particles in the atmosphere and the sun's variability on our climate.

The Glory satellite will allow scientists to measure airborne particles more accurately from space than ever before. The particles, known as "aerosols," are tiny bits of material found in Earth's atmosphere, like dust and smog. "Undoubtedly, greenhouse gases cause the biggest climatic effect," said Michael Mishchenko, the Glory project scientist at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York. "But, the uncertainty in the aerosol effect is the biggest uncertainty in climate at the present," he added.

Glory will carry two scientific instruments, the Aerosol Polarimetry Sensor, or APS, and the Total Irradiance Monitor, or TIM, and two cameras for cloud identification. The APS instrument will help quantify the role of aerosols as natural and human-produced agents of climate change more accurately than existing measurement tools.

The TIM instrument will continue 30 years of measuring total solar irradiance, the amount of energy radiating from the sun to Earth, with improved accuracy and stability. Understanding the sun's energy is an important key to understanding climate change on Earth. Glory is scheduled for launch in June 2009 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Glory will orbit as part of the Afternoon Constellation, or "A-Train," a series of Earth-observing satellites

Helium Leak Shuts Down LHC For Two Months

After last week’s transformer failure, a new hardware malfunction has stopped the LHC dead in its tracks. This time, the electrical link between two of the particle accelerator’s massive 30-ton superconducting magnets has failed, causing a magnet quench event. Due to having to warm up the section of the tunnel containing the magnet in order to conduct repairs, and then cool it back down to its -271°C operating temperature, these repairs will take at least two months.

Technical setbacks have plagued the Large Hadron Collider ever since it was started on September the 10th, including a transformer failure which shut down its cooling plant, which was only repaired on Thursday. Immediately afterwards, on Friday, during a test, one of the bus bar connections which linked cables between the magnets failed, and melted thus causing roughly a ton of liquid helium to leak into one of the tunnel sections. The fire brigade had to be called to handle the situation. "It seems to be a badly made connection – but this all has to be confirmed once we have had the chance to take a look at it," said James Gillies, director of communications at CERN.

The rather large dipole magnets that are used to steer protons around the Large Hadron Collider’s circular tract, are superconductive. What this means is that scientists have taken advantage of a property of matter by which its electrical resistance is lowered to naught when cooled very close to absolute zero. This allows much more current to be passed through the magnets, giving them much more force in steering the supercharged particles, which can run at up to 7 terra-electron-volts.

Non-superconductive magnets simply would not be strong enough to handle the proton beams, which would steer off-track, hitting the collider pipe walls. These particles, at such energy levels, can melt through several feet of steel in nanoseconds, so you don’t want those out of control.

Getting the magnets to and out of such low temperatures however – colder than outer space – takes a while however, and were it not required to use superconducting magnets, the repairs would only take a few days. This way, it will at least take two months, dangerously narrowing the window of opportunity in which to conduct the collision tests. This is because the LHC facility shuts down during the winter to save on energy costs. If they don’t get the problem fixed by then, there won’t be any collision until 2009.

CERN physicists are not very worried though, and are calling this an expected setback as the LHC, which is arguably the most complex machine ever built, has been in construction for 20 years and has so far cost more than $8 billion, and such hitches have been very probable since the beginning.

"If you keep an eye on the big picture, we've been building the machine for 20 years. The switch-on was always going to be a long process," said Gillies, who went on to say that "A year or two down the line, this moment will be a distant memory, and we'll be running smoothly."

India to Reach for the Moon Next Month

If everything goes as planned, any of the days starting October 19th to 28th would be remembered as a red-letter day for us Indians. Our very first, homespun lunar probe, Chandrayaan is all set to make its first voyage to our nearest celestial body -- the Moon on these tentative dates -- depending on the weather conditions then. If the weather plays spoil sport, the mission will need to be postponed to December. In any case, a successful mission will no doubt put India in the elite club of counties who have been able to send missions to moon.

Chandrayaan is still undergoing tests and is yet to clear the vibration and acoustic tests, which it would be subjected to later this week. These tests will simulate the conditions that the probe will need to bear at the tine of launch. These include high-temperatures, vibrations during take off and not to mention, the tremendous noise that is expected of a typical rocket launch.

Chandrayaan will carry as many as 11 payloads -- five from India, three from the European Space Agency (ESA), one from the Bulgarian Space Agency (BSA) and two from NASA, making it a truly global initiative. The two-year mission will be invaluable as the Chandrayaan is programmed to orbit the Lunar surface and digitally map it. It will also send information on the traces of the composition of the lunar surface apart from looking for atomic minerals such as thorium and uranium. The probe is also equipped with high-resolution cameras which could help shed some light on the existence of water on the moon.

A modified (rather upgraded) PSLV launch vehicle will be used to transport the probe to the lunar orbit. Due to the modifications, the PSLV C-11 will have a lift-off weight of 316 tonnes, which is much higher than the "standard" 294-ton version. Additionally, the payload capacity too has been increased from 1600 kg to 1800 kg. The PSLV has been the most successful launch vehicle for ISRO till date. It also holds the record for sending as many as 10 satellites simultaneously during its last mission. This time round, it is all set to break its own record by carrying 11 different payloads.

Undoubtedly, the Indian space program has come a long way since its initial stages when the first rocket transporter happened to be a bicycle, which carried the 9 kilo rocket to the "launch pad"! If you've found that your Sleep mode menu is dimmed out in Windows Vista, it's most likely because Media Center disabled the option when it feels that media is being shared. This is an easy setting to fix, but it's a little tough to locate without some assistance.

First, you'll need to open Control Panel. To make things easier, type in "power" into the search box, and then click on "Power Options". (for command line hackers, you can just type powercfg.cpl,1 in an admin mode command prompt and get right to the good stuff)

In the resulting screen, click the "Change plan settings" link underneath the currently selected plan.

In this screen, click "Change advanced power settings".

Now you'll need to browse down to Multimedia settings \ When sharing media.

Change both of the options to "Allow the computer to sleep". The menu item for Sleep should be back to normal.

New method makes more efficient solar cell

U.S. scientists say they have devised a method of slicing wafers of germanium for use in more efficient types of solar power cells.

University of Utah researcher Dinesh Rakwal and Assistant Professor Eberhard Bamberg say their new method should lower the cost of such cells by reducing the waste and breakage of the brittle semiconductor.
Inexpensive solar cells are used mainly on spacecraft. But the researchers said they believe their improved wafer-slicing method will allow the use of germanium-based, high-efficiency solar cells in areas where cost is a hampering factor, said Bamberg.
Rakwal, a doctoral student in mechanical engineering, added, "We're coming up with a more efficient way of making germanium wafers for solar cells to reduce the cost and weight of these solar cells and make them defect-free."
The study is to be published online in the Journal of Materials Processing Technology later this month or early October and will appear in the journal's print edition next year.

Large Hadron Collider prepares for the Big Bang

Turning on the Large Hadron Collider, the biggest scientific experiment of all time, is not as simple as flicking a switch.

The latest stage of commissioning, a major test by technicians, will only see the first attempt to circulate a beam in the giant machine near Geneva, which is housed in a 17 mile circumference tunnel.

However, the step comes at the end of 14 years of effort. Robert Aymar Director General of CERN says 10th September 2008 is "a very remarkable date" and the "start of an era."

The LHC should, if all goes well, be the world's most powerful particle accelerator, generating particle beams seven times more energetic than any previous machine, and around 30 times more intense when it reaches design performance, probably by 2010.

Inside the tunnel, two beams of particles travel at close to the speed of light with very high energies before colliding with one another. The beams travel in opposite directions in separate pipes - two tubes kept at ultrahigh vacuum.

They are guided around the accelerator ring by a strong magnetic field, achieved using superconducting magnets. These are built from coils of special electric cable that operates in a superconducting state, efficiently conducting electricity without resistance or loss of energy.

A key part of commissioning the atom smasher was chilling these magnets to a bracing -271°C - a temperature colder than outer space. For this reason, much of the accelerator is connected to a distribution system of liquid helium, which cools the magnets.

Thousands of magnets of different shapes and sizes are used to direct the beams of particles around the accelerator.

These include 1232 dipole magnets of 15 metres length which are used to bend the beams, and 392 quadrupole magnets, each up to seven metres long, to focus the beams. Just prior to collision, another type of magnet is used to 'squeeze' the particles closer together to increase the chances of collisions.

The particles are so tiny that the task of making them collide is akin to firing needles from two spots more than six miles apart with such precision that they meet halfway.

All the controls for the accelerator, its services and technical infrastructure are housed under one roof at the Control Centre of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, known by its French acronym, CERN.

From here, and within the next month or so, the beams inside the LHC will be made to collide at four locations around the accelerator ring, corresponding to the positions of the huge particle detectors, the "eyes" of the vast machine.

One of them is ATLAS, which is about 45 meters long, more than 25 meters high, and weighs about 7,000 tons. It is about half as big as the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and weighs the same as the Eiffel Tower or one hundred empty jumbo jets.

If all the data from ATLAS would be recorded, the information would fill 100,000 CDs per second. This would create a stack of CDs 450 feet high every second, which would reach to the moon and back twice each year.

As for what the eyes of the LHC will see, Prof Brian Greene, a theorist at Columbia University, New York, tells Newsweek that he is most confident that they will catch a glimpse of supersymmetry, the idea that "for ever known particle species in the world - electrons, quarks and so on - we should see a partner particle that is as yet undiscovered."

He adds that it "could provide evidence for more than three dimensions of space."

Prof Ed Witten, a theorist who works at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, likens the LHC to the Hubble space telescope: "It's built to explore the universe and understand it better."

Prof Alan Guth, a cosmologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT, adds: "What we're trying to understand is the first fraction of a second of the history of the universe."

"As a project, it's magnificent," says Prof Frank Wilczek of MIT, who has received death threats from some of the cranks who fear the start of the machine could mark the end of the world. "I like to say it's our civilization's answer to the Pyramids of Egypt."

Scientists have switched on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the device they hope will unravel some of the remaining mysteries of the universe.

At 9.30 am local time (8.30 am British Summer Time), 300 feet below the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, the most powerful particle accelerator ever built became fully operational.

The team was holding its breath in the countdown to the switch-on after a series of technical hitches, including problems with the cooling system.

The £5 billion machine has been described as a 17-mile racetrack around which two streams of protons - building blocks of matter - run in opposite directions before smashing into one another. Reaching 99.99 per cent of the speed of light, each beam will pack as much energy as a Eurostar train travelling at 90 mph.

The flashes from the collisions may help scientists reproduce the conditions that existed during the first moments after the Big Bang at the birth of the universe.

Physicists hope to learn more about the origins of mass, gravity and mysterious dark matter.

But concerns have been voiced - in particular by the German chemist Professor Otto Rossler - that black holes created by the LHC will grow uncontrollably and “eat the planet from the inside”.

These claims have been dismissed by leading scientists, including Prof Stephen Hawking of Cambridge University who said that the LHC is “feeble compared with what goes on in the universe. If a disaster was going to happen, it would have happened already.”

The switch-on saw the first stream of subatomic particles - known as Hadrons - circulating in the tunnel. The first collisions are expected in around 30 days.

The LHC will produce beams seven times more energetic than any previous machine, and around 30 times more intense when it reaches its design performance, probably by 2010.

Fix for COM Surrogate Has Stopped Working Error in Vista

If you've been getting the error COM Surrogate has stopped working whenever you browse folders containing video or media files, you have come to a good place for some possible solutions. This problem is caused because of codecs and other COM components installed by various softwares that aren't fully Vista-compatible, like some versions of DivX or Nero.

Here's the error message:

There are a number of possible solutions to this problem, and the right solution depends greatly on what software is actually causing the problem. Some of the most well-known problem causing softwares are DivX and Nero, but there are others that cause the problem as well.

Possible Solutions

•If you are using DivX, you should be upgraded to the very latest version (6.5+)

•If you are using Nero, you can try upgrading to the latest version (7.7.5.1+)

•If you have upgraded Nero and Divx and still have the problem, you can try renaming the file C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter\NeVideo.ax to NeVideo.ax.bak. You may also need to rename NeVideoHD.ax to NeVideoHD.bak
This will break Nero Showtime, however. (thanks to dugi in the comments for this one)

•You can disable Thumbnail previews, which should make the problem go away, but isn't the optimal solution.

•The older ffdshow codec pack has been known to cause some problems. The ffdshow tryouts codec pack seems to work better. Might want to try using this one: http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/

•If you'd like to uninstall Nero entirely, there is a utility that they provide to help with complete uninstall that helps a lot in instances where you have a bad installation of an older version. http://www.nero.com/nero7/eng/FAQs_Nero7_NeroVision.html

•Some users have recommended installing the Vista Codec Package in order to update all your codecs to the correct versions. I can't confirm that this works because I have not tried it myself. As always, be careful when installing unknown components and create a restore point.

•You can use the very useful MMCompView free utility from Nirsoft to disable any codecs on the system. This is very useful to help troubleshoot exactly which component is causing the problem.
•There's another possible solution below of turning off DEP for dllhost, which might not work for everybody. You may have to add divx+nero executables to the DEP ignore list.

Essentially, turning off Data Execution Prevention on dllhost (the COM surrogate) can fix this problem for some people. This solution is detailed below.

Re-Enable Hibernate Option in Windows Vista

If you've found that your Hibernate option is missing from Windows Vista, it might be from running the disk cleanup wizard and removing the hibernate files. This is due to a known bug in Vista that might not have been hotfixed already.
Turning it back on is very simple, however.
Type cmd into the start menu search box, and use Ctrl+Shift+Enter to open in administrator mode. You can also right-click the item in the menu and choose Run as Administrator.

From the command prompt, type in the following command:
powercfg /hibernate on

You'll have to restart your computer before it will take effect.
Update: Alternative Method
An alternative method with more steps was suggested by Shane in the comments. If the above doesn't fix your problem, you can use these steps.
• Go to the command prompt icon in the Start menu under Accessories and right click the icon: click "Run as administrator".
• Paste: "powercfg.exe /hibernate on" and hit Enter and also paste "powercfg -h on" and hit enter just to be safe.
• Open Control Panel and type in "Hibernate" in the Search.
• Click "Turn hibernation on or off"
• Click "Change advance power settings"
• Scroll to and expand the "Sleep" option.
• Select "Off" to the "Allow hybrid sleep" option.
• Scroll to and expand the "Power buttons and lid" option.
• Select "Hibernate" for the "Sleep button action" option. 10. Select "Hibernate" for the "Start menu power button" option.

Vista ready boost--> Ultimate feature

There are so many new features in Windows Vista that some them may not be getting their due.

this feature can work as "using flash drives as swap space."
But there are some limitation or terms of uses this facility.
These are explained here:---

1. ReadyBoost can only be used on a device that has a consistent 2.5 MB/sec 4K random read throughput and 1.75 MB/sec 512K random write throughput. When a new device is mounted and prepared for ReadyBoost, Windows conducts several speed tests on the device to ensure that it can be used. However, not all flash devices have consistent read/write throughput. Some have a block of fast memory and several blocks of slow memory, and for that reason can't be used for ReadyBoost.

2. The largest amount of flash memory that can be used for ReadyBoost is 4GB, which is the largest file that can be created in the FAT32 filesystem. (From what I understand about Vista, it is possible to format a removable drive with NTFS—something not possible in XP—but still not recommended.)

3. The brunt of the data handled by ReadyBoost is small random I/O operations, rather than large sequential reads (which is what hard drives are best for).

4. All the data stored in a ReadyBoost cache is backed up by a pagefile on a hard disk. If the flash drive with the ReadyBoost cache is unplugged, Vista falls back to the hard drive so no data loss takes place.

5. You can only use one flash device per computer.

This feature also does not work on RAM less than 512 MB.
This feature is extreamly useful when your physical memory is less to do the work with pace.

Disable Delete Confirmation Dialog in Windows vista

Every time you delete a file, Windows asks you "Are you sure you want to move this file to the Recycle Bin?" This is typically a good thing, to prevent you from deleting files by accident, but if you are trying to do some cleanup and need to delete a lot of files, you might not want to be prompted every single time.
There's a simple way to turn it off, thankfully, although I'd recommend you leave it on the majority of the time.

Just right-click on your Recycle Bin and choose Properties from the menu.

Now you'll see the Trash Properties dialog, and notice the "Display delete confirmation dialog" at the bottom.

Just uncheck the box, and close the dialog. No more confirmations! (I'd still recommend that you turn it back on when you are done cleaning up your computer)

Disable All Notification Balloons in Windows Vista

In Microsoft Windows vista systems tray, user interect with "pop up notification ballons". Some times it is helpfull, But for IT professionals and other super users, this is most annoying thing on vista.

You should remove this ballons permanently by some easy 'Registry Hack'.

Follow this:--

Open up regedit.exe through the start menu search or run box, and then browse down to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Right-click on the right-hand pane, and create a new 32-bit DWORD with the following values:
* Name: EnableBalloonTips
* Value: 0
You'll have to logoff and back on in order to see the change… or to be more correct, you won't see any popup balloons anymore.

Trick To open 'windows Explorer'

It is reopen itself, but if it not go for the process given below-->

1. In XP Press 'clt + alt + delete' keys to open task manager.
In vista Press 'clt + alt + delete' keys to open option window, and then select task manager to open it.
2. Now in the task manager click on file and then 'new task(run)'.

3. In the 'open' box write 'explorer.exe' or simply 'explorer' and then press 'OK' button.

4. Now the explorer restartes again.
